A security guard is a highly responsible individual with vigilance required while on the job. They are held
accountable for the property, assets, and people they are protecting. It does not involve years of
education, only hours to complete basic security training. It’s a job that requires dedication, but it’s
rewarding and allows you to take pride in your work.
It’s a good stepping stone for those who wish to advance their career in law enforcement, and has
plenty of room for internal promotion within your security organization. You never lose your security
experience and skills, so by simply renewing your security license, you can find employment.
Bodyguards require stamina and endurance, as well as excellent physical shape. A bodyguard’s main
focus is to protect an individual. That can include celebrities, athletes, and everyday people. Bodyguards
escort them, keeping a constant vigil over the client and use strategic planning for their protection.
It’s recommended that you complete a bodyguard training program or possess some sort of formal
training in personal security. It’s also beneficial to have law enforcement and criminal justice experience.
Training in weapons disarmament, martial arts, or running are often seen as advantages and can be
ascertained on your own.
Loss Prevention Officers
Loss prevention officers serve the retail industry, including single stores, malls, outlet centres, and
warehouses. They monitor a store’s merchandise and cash register to prevent shoplifting, while training
the store’s staff in loss prevention strategies. A loss prevention officer will be present in the store or
behind security cameras to maximize surveillance. They need strong observational skills to detect
suspicious behaviour while possessing an even temper to calmly confront people or difficult situations.
A high school diploma or GED is sufficient to become a loss prevention officer, but if you want to
advance in this career, it’s recommended to obtain a level 2 advanced security license to be awarded
with more complicated positions, thus earning even higher wages. The hours of this type of job match
those of a store, which include evening and weekend shifts. Loss prevention training can be gained on
the job by shadowing an experienced fellow officer.
